There is no responsible universal schedule for every vehicle. Use the owner's manual and manufacturer maintenance schedule for the exact year, model, engine, drivetrain, battery or emissions configuration, market, and duty cycle. Time and mileage can both matter. “Severe service” has a vehicle-specific definition; do not adopt a shop's generic label without comparing it with the manufacturer criteria.

For each item, record the last documented service, next inspection or service basis, specification, and evidence source. Compare shops, estimates, and parts by the work

Ask for a written estimate describing the diagnosis, parts, labor, fees, warranty, and work considered urgent, scheduled, monitor-only, or optional. Ask what observation, measurement, code, leak, schedule, or test supports the recommendation. A second opinion can be useful for expensive or uncertain repairs, especially when scopes differ.

An independent general shop, specialty shop, mobile technician, tire store, body shop, glass shop, or dealership may each be appropriate for different work. Some tasks require manufacturer programming, security access, warranty authorization, specialized tooling, advanced driver-assistance calibration, high-voltage qualification, or model-specific experience. Ask what capability the work requires instead of assuming one shop type is always best.

OEM, OEM-equivalent, aftermarket, remanufactured, and used parts can differ in design, certification, fit, warranty, availability, and price. Choose from the actual application, safety role, installer requirements, and expected ownership. Request old parts where lawful, appropriate, and useful, but recognize that cores, warranty returns, contamination, or shop policy can affect availability.

Know the DIY boundary

Good beginner candidates

Wiper blades, some accessible engine or cabin filters, tire-pressure checks, washer fluid, some accessible bulbs, and simple cosmetic care can be reasonable when the owner has the correct manual procedure and parts.

Vehicle-dependent DIY

Oil changes, battery replacement, brakes, spark plugs, fluid service, and many underbody tasks depend on safe lifting, torque, environmental handling, reset or programming procedures, high current, access, and exact specifications.

Professional or specialized work

Safety restraints, internal transmission repair, significant electrical diagnosis, advanced driver-assistance calibration, regulated refrigerant service, major engine work, structural repair, and high-voltage EV systems usually require professional training, equipment, or legal handling.

Stop when the procedure, specifications, protective equipment, lifting support, diagnostic method, or disposal path is uncertain. Disconnecting a warning lamp or clearing a code is not a repair.
