The sequence matters. Identity is established before configuration matching. Market evidence is filtered before price statistics are calculated. Condition adjustments are applied only after the base estimate exists. The Buyer Decision is then rebuilt from the latest report model so edits do not leave an older verdict behind.

Inputs

Major inputs include VIN, listing URL, price, mileage, configuration, dealer information, manual market values, comparable-market metadata, repair estimates, quote fields, optional trade-in details, inspection answers, Action Center status, dealer answers, user corrections, and user preferences. VIN is required for independent purchase-vehicle source checks. Price, mileage, valuation, repair, quote, trade-in, inspection, and dealer fields improve context but are optional.

Missing inputs remain explicit and are classified as required to continue, high-value improvement, helpful, or optional. The report shows one best next step before secondary details. A missing asking price prevents seller-price analysis but does not change the market estimate. Missing mileage creates a preliminary, wider estimate with lower confidence when the comparable evidence is otherwise sufficient. An unresolved multi-option trim broadens configuration matching only when trim materially varies. ZIP is optional for the nationwide baseline and required only for a regional comparison. A failed source remains failed or unavailable; it is not converted into a favorable result. User-entered values retain their provenance and are not relabeled as independently verified.

Evidence hierarchy

Carvocate labels government or official source data, dealer-provided information, user-confirmed information, user corrections, calculated estimates, and unavailable information separately. Official data can still be incomplete or wrong. Conflicts are shown rather than silently merged. Verdicts use these labels and keep confidence separate from the current recommendation.

Verified from VIN

Means: A value came from NHTSA vPIC decoding for the submitted VIN.

Does not mean: It is not a physical inspection, title check, accident report, or proof of installed options.

Trim needs confirmation

Means: NHTSA vPIC returned grouped trim data instead of one confirmed trim.

Does not mean: The grouped value is preserved as VIN evidence, but exact trim matching waits for user confirmation.

Imported from listing

Means: A value was read from a dealer listing or listing metadata.

Does not mean: It is not independently verified merely because it was imported.

Entered by you

Means: A value was typed, selected, or imported by the user during the workflow.

Does not mean: Carvocate does not treat it as a government or dealer-verified fact.

User confirmed

Means: A user completed a specific requested field and saved the value for this vehicle.

Does not mean: The confirmation records provenance but does not make the value government, manufacturer, or dealer verified.

Corrected by you

Means: A user changed a VIN-derived or imported value.

Does not mean: The correction remains visible as a user correction until another source supports it.

Estimated

Means: A value is calculated from available inputs or returned as a standardized estimate.

Does not mean: It is not a guarantee of actual cost, condition, or performance.

Unavailable

Means: The app does not have enough data or the source did not provide the value.

Does not mean: Unavailable is not the same as none, safe, or problem-free.

Needs confirmation

Means: Carvocate found an uncertain or missing value that requires user review.

Does not mean: The analysis may be incomplete until the user confirms it.

Cached

Means: The app is showing locally saved source results or shell assets.

Does not mean: Cached values may differ from current source data.

Could not refresh

Means: A source request failed or was blocked.

Does not mean: The failed request is not converted into a clean result.

Market estimate methodology

The Carvocate Market Estimate is based on active dealer asking prices returned by the configured MarketCheck provider. Active listings are evidence of the current asking market, not proof of completed sale prices. Carvocate does not use the subject seller's asking price to calculate the estimate. That separation prevents the price under review from pulling its own benchmark upward or downward.

After VIN decode supplies year, make, and a provider-supported model, Carvocate automatically attempts the nationwide baseline. Mileage, ZIP, asking price, dealer, and repairs do not block that request. When subject mileage is absent, usable listings still need real mileage values; Carvocate analyzes their observed median and interquartile spread, applies a bounded 3%-8% uncertainty allowance to range width, applies no invented subject mileage, and prevents High confidence. The report labels this mode as a preliminary VIN baseline.

The provider request uses verified year, make, and provider-supported model. Carvocate keeps display model, provider model, market model family, duty class, and weight series as separate facts. A verified Silverado HD Series 3500 identity uses the provider model Silverado 3500HD; it never relaxes into Silverado 1500. Confirmed trim, mileage, drivetrain, engine, body or cab, and bed details refine the returned sample locally, so a buyer correction normally does not create another provider call.

Carvocate removes duplicate records by available VIN, provider ID, normalized URL, dealer-plus-stock number, or dealer-plus-VIN, then removes implausible prices, fundamental identity mismatches, cross-duty-class trucks, incompatible configurations, identifiable branded-title or damage wording, and statistical price outliers. It evaluates exact configuration, strong configuration, same series, same family, adjacent year, and broad provisional tiers in that order. Each tier must pass quality-aware sufficiency rules; many weak matches cannot override a series mismatch or unstable price distribution.

The displayed midpoint is a weighted median. The normal range is based on weighted quartiles and widens by disclosed components for fallback depth, the observed mismatch/broader-match share, and unknown subject mileage. A same-family or broad provisional result is labeled Provisional and lowers Buyer Decision authority. When no tier passes, Carvocate reports the attempted tiers, why each failed, and the safest next inputs instead of fabricating a range.

Confidence methodology

Confidence describes the quality of support behind a result, not whether the result is favorable. A vehicle can have a low estimate and Low confidence, or a high estimate and High confidence. The label considers effective weighted sample size, exact configuration match rate, missing comparable fields, mileage similarity, price spread, outlier burden, listing freshness, geographic coverage, and conditional-price warnings.

Many returned listings do not automatically produce High confidence. Fifty records with missing trim, broad mileage differences, old check dates, or a wide price spread can be weaker than a smaller tightly matched group. Effective sample size accounts for listing weights, so low-quality matches cannot create a misleading count advantage.

Confidence also drops when the subject vehicle itself is uncertain. A grouped or missing VIN trim lowers confidence only when trim materially varies in the sample. Missing mileage, an unconfirmed material body configuration, or an unresolved source failure can limit how specifically the sample is matched. The report separately shows what supports the estimate, what weakens it, and which actionable buyer-provided fact would improve it.

Repair adjustment methodology

Condition-adjusted value equals the selected base market value minus included repair impact. Each defect can carry a description, category, severity, cost or cost range, estimate source, adjustment percentage, status, notes, and date. The deduction uses the stored estimate and buyer-reviewed inclusion decision; Carvocate does not invent a repair cost.

An unresolved repair is not automatically a full dollar-for-dollar deduction. The base estimate may already reflect normal used-car wear, and some quoted work may be preventive rather than immediately necessary. Users can mark a repair as already reflected, excluded, uncertain, completed, or included. These states prevent the same condition issue from being silently counted twice.

Repair ranges remain ranges. A rough user estimate is labeled differently from a written shop quote or completed invoice. Safety-related defects can influence next actions even when the cost is unknown, but an unknown cost does not become a made-up number in the valuation.

Trade-in planning methodology

Trade-in analysis is optional and remains separate from the purchase vehicle's market estimate. Carvocate first checks the trade vehicle's retail market evidence using its own identity, mileage, and configuration. It never relabels the purchase vehicle's market estimate or a dealer retail asking-price midpoint as the trade vehicle's acquisition value.

When a usable retail range exists, Carvocate derives a broader trade-in planning range by applying a disclosed acquisition-planning reserve. The current reserve is 8%-16% for High-confidence retail evidence, 10%-19% for Moderate confidence, and 13%-24% for Low confidence. The range represents uncertainty around dealer inspection, acquisition, holding, selling costs, reconditioning, and margin. It is a Carvocate planning assumption, not a reported dealer deduction or observed wholesale-auction transaction.

Documented issues and user-entered reconditioning costs are subtracted only when marked for inclusion and not already reflected in the retail basis. The dealer allowance remains separate evidence and does not alter the estimate. Trade equity equals the dealer allowance minus the current lender payoff. Tax effects are excluded because rules vary by jurisdiction. Trade confidence is reduced at least one level from retail confidence because direct wholesale evidence and the dealer's actual disposition plan are unavailable.

Buyer Decision methodology

The Buyer Decision combines market position, condition, included repair burden, safety records, inspection findings, written quote details, unresolved questions, buyer priorities, and walk-away limits. It does not average unrelated facts into one opaque score. The current recommendation, main concern, confidence explanation, and primary next action are derived from the same saved report model.

Strong language requires stronger evidence. A vehicle may be “Worth pursuing after specific checks” when the price appears reasonable but an inspection or recall completion remains unresolved. Seller position is classified as below range, within the lower half, near midpoint, within the upper half, or above range using the full condition-adjusted range. A price above midpoint but inside the range is not called overpriced. “Only worthwhile at a lower price” is used for above-range evidence or a materially high midpoint-only gap. “Not enough information yet” is used when essential valuation or condition inputs are absent.

Suggested buy-price guidance is graded Full, Limited, Provisional, or Insufficient. A defensible condition-adjusted market range can support a suggested buy range, but an exact opening offer requires Full evidence, a seller asking price, and priced unresolved defects. Provisional evidence never manufactures a precise opening offer. The user's walk-away amount remains separate. Dealer fees, add-ons, trade equity, negative equity, and financing are analyzed in the Quote workflow and do not redefine the vehicle's market value.

Editing, provenance, and recalculation

Edit details lets users correct vehicle and deal fields. Changing the VIN starts a new identity check before replacing a saved vehicle. Corrected values remain labeled. Edit history records changed fields, previous values, new values, source labels, and timestamps. Users can restore imported or verified values when available.

Dependent report summaries, Buyer Decisions, Action Center items, dealer questions, market comparisons, condition-adjusted values, Garage rows, Compare views, quote entries, and inspection records update after saves. Mileage, trim, drivetrain, engine, cab, and bed changes rebuild the estimate from a compatible preserved provider sample when appropriate. Asking-price and repair edits update downstream deal calculations only. If a refresh fails, cached or failed-source states remain visible.

Method limits

Carvocate does not currently determine title status, lien status, accident history, flood or salvage history, odometer fraud, theft status, maintenance history, warranty validity, insurance cost, exact taxes in every jurisdiction, mechanical condition without inspection, or dealer reputation. Recalls, complaints, investigations, and manufacturer communications are separate signals; one must not be relabeled as another.

The Carvocate Market Estimate is not an appraisal and does not claim licensed KBB, Black Book, JD Power, or Edmunds data. Repair estimates are not guarantees. External services can be delayed, incomplete, unavailable, or wrong. Buyers should verify identity, title, condition, recall completion, and written terms independently.
